IT for human or human for IT?

I have read recently that:
1)
futuristic forecast in the beginning of the 20th century promised that a person in the beginning of 21st century (it's me!) wll wotk for living 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, 9 months per year;
2)
really a current person works a month per year more than a person in the years after WW2

So, what are those all faxes, voice mails, PDAs, CRM, ERP are for? ,:-0
I want the horses back instead of cars!
