It seems that their may be something comparing the version of Visio.  I downloaded the latest VEA (2005 although it's really 2003 for office 2003) and  the toolbox will only shows up for Database Diagram.

No mater what I do I cannot get the toolbox to show up under  ORM Source or ER...

I'm guessing it's looking at the version of visio that's showing up (2003) and hiding itself based on that.

Hi Chris,

I don't have the latest VEA so I am unable to play with this. If you could answer a couple of questions, it would help me out:

1) Are you sure you are using the EA version and not Pro? In an ORM model, you get the database properties window when you double click on a shape and everything, right?

2) Could you find the related stencils and get me their file names? Better yet, could you email them to me (use my first name at orthogonalsoftware dot com)? In the 2002 install, they can be found (by default) at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio10\1033\Solutions\Database and are named something like ORM Source, ER Source, and Database Model Diagram with vss and vst extensions. Your guess is close: the toolbox is looking at the open templates and only showing itself as appropriate. If MS switched some properties around between 2002 and 2003, it might be hiding the toolbar.

Thanks Much,
Scot.

Yup

Okay I'll email them to you.  In my install they are located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\1033

There is no Solutions\Database folder.

Hi Chris and Scot,

I had the same problem with VEA and the new version, the toolbox was not visible. But in the meantime, I found the way: The box appears when you are opening a general database design window, at the bottom of the screen. It does not appear when you are in a ORMSourceCode window. You are directly able to view the facttypes and objects. When you try to export ORM, the message is coming up informing you that you have to enable Visual Basic and its project creation activation. Additionally, it is necessary to set all security measurements of VISIO to the lowest level (tools/options/security [check all]/macro security [also check all]). It works perfectly on the official release delivered together with Visual Studio 2005. I have not tried with the beta version, whih showed the same symptoms, bu I guess that there is no problem.

Hope, this helps, I personally have big fun with the toolbox.

Best regards, Wolfgang

Hi Wolfgang,

Thanks for the feedback.

This release of Visio changed some file names that are used by the toolbox to determine if it should be enabled or not. I have a patch version that fixes that. E-mail me if you would like it.

As to the security setting issue, I am going to be working on that soon, and once fixed I'll release a new (public) version for both issues (and a couple of others).

Thanks Much,
Scot.

With regards to the "Microsoft Visual Basic For Applications project creation must be enabled..." error message:

The security level (Tools | Macros | Security...) appears to be irrelevant (High vs. Low). However, on the Trusted Publishers tab, "Trust access to Visual Basic Project" must be checked.

Failure to have this checked will result in no export of ORM model subtype information; however, everything else should export fine. If you have no ORM subtypes, the message can be disregarded. I'll add a FAQ and provide better error text in version 1.5.1 (under development now).

FYI,
Scot.
